Sec. 01Post-hail checklist

Hail just hit. Do this, in this order.

Tarp first, photos second, call us third. The claim is won or lost in the first 48 hours.

01

Tarp first

Water in the house beats everything else. Our storm line — (403) 555-0141 — runs same-day tarps, photographed and dated, so the emergency fix becomes claim evidence.

02

Photos second

Wide shots of every elevation, close-ups of dents in soft metals — vents, flashing, even the barbecue lid. Adjusters read soft metal like a weather report. Move nothing yet.

03

Call us third

Before your insurer, before the door-knockers. A proper damage report filed on day one sets the tone for the entire claim — and costs you nothing.

04

Sign nothing at the door

After every June storm, out-of-province crews work Calgary door to door. No assessment scribbled on a clipboard is worth your signature. Get the documentation first.

Sec. 02Scope of work

Four trades. One standard of documentation.

Everything we touch gets measured, photographed, and written down — because in this city, your exterior is also your evidence.

02.1

Roofing — replacement & repair

Full tear-off to the deck, never an overlay. Class 4 impact shingles are our baseline spec, because in Calgary a Class 3 roof is just a nicer thing to replace after the next June storm.

SPEC — Tear-off to deck · ice & water beyond code minimum · open-metal valleys

02.2

Siding & exteriors

Hail-rated vinyl and fibre cement, installed to shed chinook freeze-thaw movement. When your profile is discontinued, we document the mismatch — that's how whole elevations get approved instead of patchwork.

SPEC — Hail-rated profiles · colour & profile match reports · housewrap detailing

02.3

Eavestrough & drainage

Five-inch seamless trough on hidden hangers rated for ice load, with downspouts placed for where Calgary water actually goes: away from the foundation, not onto the sidewalk to refreeze.

SPEC — 5" seamless · ice-rated hangers · heat-cable ready · leaf screens optional

02.4

Emergency tarping

Same-day response during storm season, strapped — not nailed through good shingle. Every tarp job is logged with dated photos, because mitigation is claimable and undocumented work is a donation.

SPEC — Same-day dispatch · strapped anchoring · dated photo log filed with claim

Sec. 03Roof anatomy · Section A–A

What's under a Slate & Summit roof

Shingles are the 15 percent you can see. The other 85 percent decides whether chinook melt ends up in your attic. Select a layer to see what it does — in plain language.

Hover, tap, or use Tab and Enter — each layer lights up in the section drawing.

Sec. 04The insurance playbook

The claim is a process. We run it with you.

Most homeowners handle one hail claim in their life. We handle them every June. Here is exactly what working with us looks like, start to finish.

01

Document

Drone photos of every slope, chalk-circled impacts, hits counted per test square, soft-metal evidence logged. A dated report written in the language adjusters actually use.

02

File

We help you open the claim and hand your insurer a complete scope of loss — measurements, material-match documentation, and the code items that are easy to leave off and expensive to miss.

03

We attend the adjuster meeting

You shouldn't have to argue shingle ratings on your own roof. We're there, on the shingles, with the evidence. Most disagreements end up on the roof — not in a call centre queue.

04

Build

Once the scope is settled: Class 4 shingles, code-plus detailing, a 10-year workmanship warranty — and a final invoice that matches the approved claim, line for line.

We work for the homeowner. Not the insurer.

Your insurance company pays us nothing, so we owe them nothing. And if the damage doesn't justify a claim — if a small repair costs less than your deductible — we'll tell you that too. Sometimes the right advice is don't file.

Sec. 05Materials & standards

Our spec sheet, in plain sight

Every Slate & Summit roof is built to the same written standard — the one an adjuster can't argue with and a chinook can't pry open.

STD-01

Class 4 impact shingles

The highest impact rating shingles carry, standard on every roof we build — never a line-item upgrade. Ask your insurer about the premium discount; many offer one.

STD-02

Triple-seal penetrations

Every vent, stack, and mast gets sealed three ways — flange, fastener, and collar. Penetrations are where roofs actually fail; ours are where we slow down.

STD-03

Ice & water shield to code-plus

Membrane runs past the code minimum at eaves and valleys, because chinook melt doesn't read the building code. It refreezes at the gutter line — so that's where we overbuild.

STD-04

Open-metal valleys

Valleys carry the most water and take the most hail, so we line them with metal instead of weaving shingle. Slower to install, longer to fail.

STD-05

Documented deck repairs

Every sheet of decking we replace is photographed before it's covered. If it's on your invoice, there's a picture of the reason.

STD-06

Magnetic nail sweep — twice

Full-yard sweep with a 36-inch magnetic bar at rough clean-up and again at final. Check your lawn all you like; you won't find our nails.

10YR

Ten years. On paper. On purpose.

Our workmanship warranty covers how the roof was built — fastening, flashing, sealing — for a decade, in writing, registered at final invoice. If it leaks because of how we built it, we fix it: no deductible, no debate, no phone tag. It's separate from your shingle manufacturer's warranty and transferable once if you sell the house.

IN WRITING AT FINAL INVOICE TRANSFERABLE ×1 SEPARATE FROM MFR. WARRANTY

Sec. 06Field reports

What homeowners say after the dust settles

The adjuster's first offer called it cosmetic. Slate & Summit's report counted fourteen impacts per test square, slope by slope. Full replacement approved the same week — I didn't argue once; their paperwork did.
Marianne Lake Bonavista — SE Calgary Full replacement · hail claim
Hail hit June 2nd; the tarp was on that evening. They ran the whole claim, sat through the adjuster meeting on my roof, and handed over a Class 4 roof by August. I never once had to pretend I know what a starter strip is.
Dev Evanston — NW Calgary Tarp to build · 9 weeks
They told me not to file. The damage didn't justify a claim and the repair cost less than my deductible — so they fixed it for a few hundred dollars and left. Guess who I called two summers later when it did hail through.
